Open Dental is a Practice Management Software licensed under the GNU General Public License.
The database uses the dual licensed MySQL database program. The structure of the data, or schema, is available for all to see and use (the data is still very secure). It is totally different than the proprietary format that all other dental software uses.

Using open source software is the only way out of vendor lock because anyone has the freedom to support the software, to make improvements to it, and to resell it.
Open Dental will always belong to the entire dental community. Plan for the future and use a database that is built on open standards, not one that is closed and proprietary.
